VIENNA CUP WITH SAUCER 1801
SORGENTHAL PERIOD

The front of the cylindrical white cup is provided with a reserve in polychromy over the entire height: a little girl is sleeping on a bed of sheaves under a tree. The scene is framed in gold with an impasto-painted, filled zigzag band on a matt gold background, gold rim on the upper edge, the back of the cup is richly decorated with gold with filled arched ribbons on the upper and lower edge, in the middle a wide frieze with stylized plant motifs. Angular gold-painted handle in J-shape with leaf and console end.
Saucer with a high, raised flag and smooth mirror, a large yellow background, in the center a hexagonal reserve with a winged putto with a tambourine in gray, monochrome painting, probably inspired by the bronze work that Donatello made in 1492 for the Baptistery of Siena, which is now in the Bode Museum in Berlin. On the rim of the plate there are ribbons in gray and gold with stylized leaf and flower motifs.

Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal (1735 Nuremberg - 1805 Vienna) From 1784 until his death he headed the Viennese porcelain manufactory, which under his leadership enjoyed great economic and artistic growth ('painterly period').
Sorgenthal was also the chief official for the state manufacturing system. (Wikipedia)

AUGARTEN WIEN
MOCHA MELON SET
JOSEF HOFFMANN

In 1929, Josef Hoffmann, founder of the legendary 'Wiener Werkstätte, designed this world-famous mocha service. Hoffmann was one of the greatest designers of the 20th century and a member of the 'Vienna Secession' with artists such as Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner. Due to its numerous curves, it still places the highest demands on Augarten's porcelain painters when it comes to handling the air brush. The exoticism of the fruit shapes with the perky handle knob as well as the pleasantly grippy handles, whose softly undulating shape elegantly reflects the softly ribbed walls of the vessels, characterise the charisma of this service.
